NC Chamber Foundation Names Iredell County
NC Works Certified Work Ready Community

Mooresville, N.C - Over 80 local business leaders gathered at the NC Works Certified Work Ready Community celebration held at the Unity Center in Statesville on Thursday, January 26, 2017.  President and CEO, Lew Ebert of the North Carolina Chamber Foundation presented Chairman, James Mallory of the Iredell County Board of Commissioners the NC Works Certified Work Ready Community certificate at the celebration.

The NC Works Certified Work Ready Community is an initiative and collaborative effort between workforce development partners at the local and state level.  The program is aimed at leveraging data and analysis tools to continue economic growth in North Carolina. The North Carolina Chamber Foundation serves as the final certifying body to designate a NC Works Certified Work Ready Community.

To be a certified NC Works Certified Work Ready Community, a county must meet each of the following criteria:
•      A letter of commitment to workforce excellence from county leaders
•      Progress in the high school graduation rate toward the goal of 94 percent.
•      Achieve the number of National Career Readiness Certificates indicated in the Common Criteria.
•      Gain commitment from employers to recognize the NCRC

The National Career Readiness Certificate demonstrates foundational skills of job seekers in a community and serves as the basis for Common Criteria.

This initiative provides a framework to empower counties with the data, processes and tools that drive economic growth. The framework aligns education, workforce development and industry while matching individuals’ skills to job requirements.

David Hollars, Executive Director for the Centralina Workforce Development Board said “The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud to a partner with Iredell County in being recognized as an NCWorks Work Ready Community.  The Board believes that having a skilled workforce, ready to meet the talent needs of local employers is the essential element in having strong and thriving communities in our region.   The Board and its local NCWorks Career Centers stand with the other business, education, and community partners in making Iredell County Work Ready – for today and for the future.”

Chairman James Mallory of the Iredell County Board of Commissioners said, “The ACT Work Ready qualification by Iredell County is an objective demonstration of our community's commitment to supplying a quality workforce to meet the needs of existing and potential industry, while at the same time providing our citizens with the demonstrable skills needed to qualify for career opportunities that will provide excellent income potential to support their families and lifestyles.”

The Career Readiness Certification is a measure of the quality of the available workforce.  ACT WRC is a partnership with Business and Industry leaders to recognize and/or show preference in the hiring process for those who have earned the certification.  As more businesses recognize and value the CRC for potential hires, more students will recognize the importance of doing well on the WorkKeys test, striving for CRCs that are silver or higher,” said Todd Williams Director of Career and Technical Education for Iredell-Statesville Schools.

Russ Rogerson, Executive Director of the MSIEDC and SRD said, “There is great value in being certified.  We now have the framework in place to demonstrate to business and industry that we have the skilled workforce it needs.”
