From the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library: The Hidden History of Mayberry

April 19th, 2015 (Sunday)

2:00 p.m.

Admission is free.

Dr. Gary Freeze, Professor of History at Catawba College, will present his popular program THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF MAYBERRY. In his discussion of "The Andy Griffith Show", Dr. Freeze will present what he believes to be a "hidden history" contained within its episodes that show Mayberry was a particular type of North Carolina community located in a particular place in the western half of the state (one that is, by and large, not very Charlottean). Dr. Freeze will provide a richer, deeper perspective on the multi-cultural, deeply complex society that characterized our state's most famous fictional town --- which can be projected into our current debates about the state of our state.

Dr. Freeze recently completed his twenty-five year project to document the entire history of Catawba County. The books in his trilogy are as follows: "The Catawbans: Crafters of a North Carolina County", "The Catawbans: Pioneers in Progress", and the just-published final volume in the trilogy "The Catawbans: Boomers and Bypasses".  Dr. Freeze has also written a book on Mayberry that is due to be published later this year.

(Included in this program will be excerpts from "The Andy Griffith Show".)
