York County Growing On All Fronts 4-11-17

By David Swenson, Director, York County Economic Development

With last week’s official launch of our new website, that will help promote York County as the premier location to do business in the Southeast, it seems like the perfect time for a York County growth update.

Brand Growth

Beyond our new website’s data resources and new design, visitors will see the new logo and tagline for economic development in York County.  “The Location You Need. The Life You Want” is brought to life with the site’s Locate Here, Live Here, Grow Here navigation. Private investors from the York County Growth Partners funded these branding efforts.

Job Growth

Over the past 12 months we have seen 17 companies commit to York County, adding over 900 new jobs and investing more that $124 million of capital. These firms represent a mix of manufacturing, office and warehouse operations.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics quarterly employment and wage report released in March, York County had the highest percent increase in annual job growth in the nation, out of the country’s 344 largest counties. Employment rose 6% from the previous year compared to an overall 1.7% growth rate in the U.S.  Read the Charlotte Business Journal story

Population Growth

York County’s estimated population in July 2016 was 258,526, up 3%.  This was the second highest growth rate in Charlotte USA behind Lancaster County, SC.  According to Census data at the same time, about 2.47 million people called the Charlotte-Concord Gastonia metro area home, which officially includes 10 of our 16-county footprint.  See where other counties in the Charlotte metro ranked

Building Growth

We have two new large industrial buildings planned and three under construction. These new buildings are in addition to our two ready-to-go spec industrial buildings and over half dozen existing industrial buildings on the market.

Resource Growth

Our brand new website has many resources including the York County Data Center, an online interactive dashboard that provides data and trend analysis useful for prospective employers, site selectors and other economic development stakeholders as they evaluate and make business and policy decisions. The Data Center makes it easy to find current economic, demographic and workforce information sourced from official government data.  The site’s seamless integration with the South Carolina Department of Commerce’s new LocateSC showcases available real estate properties for the county.  Read The Herald story

It is safe to say that a lot of growth has taken place with the likelihood of more on the horizon.  If you want to learn more about anything mentioned here or schedule a visit, email me or our Marketing Director Caroline Floyd.
