Harry Jones, trusted mentor and friend
My dear friend, former Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones, was laid to rest yesterday. Since he passed away last week, I have been thinking about how much he added to my life, both personally and professionally.
Harry was one of the first people I met when I arrived in Charlotte 12 years ago. From the beginning, he was a mentor helping me navigate the ins, outs and personalities of Charlotte.
Over the years, we developed a deep friendship and I considered him one of the good guys.
A strong supporter of regionalism, he was also a member of The Partnership’s board of directors for more than a decade. As an organization, we greatly benefitted from his involvement and straightforward counsel.
As he led the County through some very turbulent times, including the recession, I was always in awe of how someone with such a big job never seemed overwhelmed. He was truly level headed and unflappable. From him, I learned not to sweat the small stuff and focus on the bigger prize.
Throughout his illness, I continued to be amazed by his drive and strength. I wish I had known our lunch a few months ago would be our last. He was a true visionary, leader and friend I will greatly miss.
